According to Sylvie’s theory of what caused Matthew’s trauma, three American homophobic thugs, whose car broke down, and whom Matthew gave a ride to, while driving with James Brighton in the Adirondacks. The three would have taken control of the car and forced Matthew to take part in the beating death of James Brighton. They would have then brought Matthew to Montreal where they beat him and left him naked in a parking lot in Old Montreal on a freezing October night where he woke up thinking his name was James Brighton.
